The Washington Convention Center Authority (WCCA) hosted an official dedication ceremony to rename the venue the Walter E. Washington Convention Center after the District of Columbia's first elected mayor. Among his many accolades, Mayor Washington was credited for bringing home rule to the city in 1975 as well as heading off race riots and diffusing tensions during the period following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1968.
