This editor came across this article on Apple's decision NOT to exhibit at NAB, as well as their plans to scale back on trade shows. The decision was based on the company’s feeling that “there are better ways to reach our customers.” I shared this article with RD Whitney, CEO of Caroo Media, a division of the Tarsus Group and parent company of TSNN.com, and he had this response:
"This is exactly opposite of the trends we are seeing in tradeshows overall. We are finding through our research at TSNN.com (and our new TSAI™ - Trade Show Activity Indicator) that companies are reacting to the economic headlines and realizing this is a time to get in front of customers more --not less. We can only assume that management at Apple believes their brand is so strong that they don't feel it is necessary. Not many marketing experts would agree that you should attend fewer shows ‘because there are better ways to reach customers,’ but maybe they just have their iPods on too loud to hear the wisdom. Most organizations realize that shows need to be part of an integrated mix. This move makes you wonder if short-term Wall Street concerns for profit outweigh keeping your ear to the rail for customer shifts and long term face-to-face relationship building."
The NAB Show – Where Content Comes to Life™ (Las Vegas Convention Center, Conferences: April 11-17; Exhibits: April 14-17) has a highlights section on the home page of their website in which the visitor can review the previous day’s highlights, the current day’s line-up of activities, and the next day’s features. Each highlight links to a full page article on the specific event. Monday, April 14th’s highlights included “(Tim) Robbins Dazzles, Shocks, Challenges Broadcasters” and “(Bob) Barker Honored at Television Luncheon.” For more information, visit www.nabshow.com.
The CTIA WIRELESS 2008 (Las Vegas Convention Center, April 1-3) website includes an “Exhibitor PR Tools” page in their “Exhibitor Zone” section which encouraged exhibitors to “use CTIA WIRELESS as a platform for announcing your company’s significant Second Quarter/Spring news. No other venue brings together all of the key reporters who cover wireless technology.” The page includes contact details for three CTIA PR staff as well as links to the following PR opportunities: Pre-Registered Media List; Exhibitor PR Contact Form; Exhibitor Press Kits; Media Center; Exhibitor Interview Rooms; Press Conference Room; VPO/Online Media Center; Official Show Dailies; and Media Sponsorships. All Things Organic (McCormick Place, Chicago, IL, April 26-29), features an “Organic Fashion Evolution” as part of their Special Events Program. The Evolution is produced in cooperation with the Fashion Design Program at Chicago’s International Academy of Design & Technology (IADT), who developed a class on Organic Textiles specifically to work on this project. Each participating student created three organic garments and accessories made with organic textiles to be modeled on the show floor on Monday, April 28th at 4:00 PM. In their daily Specialty Food (e)Newsletter, the NASFT Fancy Food Show has an ad for their upcoming shows with separate links for “Learn About Exhibiting” and “Learn About Attending.” Each page includes video overviews of exciting products, exhibitors, people and events at the shows, as well as easy access to requesting more information and registering.
